With Thanksgiving approaching, it’s a good time to think about what your candidates are grateful for when they apply to your company. Have candidates expressed gratitude for your easy-to-find careers page on Facebook or your detailed application instructions on Indeed? Figuring out what your candidates appreciate allows you to do more of that and keep the high quality applications coming.

An Easy Application Process

When your candidates can figure out how to apply to your company quickly and easily, it’s a breath of fresh air for them. Taking the guesswork out of finding your application page and making it easy to follow steps to submit an application is a great way to make your candidates’ lives easier and show them that your company acts intelligently. If your application process isn’t geared towards making hiring simple, it can sow seeds of doubt about how your company operates in general.

Transparency about Position

For the most part, candidates apply to jobs that they believe they are qualified for and actually want to do. When you are clear about the qualifications and expectations for a position, it allows potential candidates to make an informed decision about whether the job is right for them. If you leave out pertinent information (like salary, work hours, or job tasks), it puts candidates in a position to drop out of the hiring process when they find out the job isn’t a good fit.

Information about Your Company

Candidates can find at least cursory information about your company online. However, this isn’t the best way to introduce a candidate to your company and may not yield the best results. Put a face on your brand by making it easy for candidates to find out more about your company, gearing the information specifically for someone that may wish to become “part of the team.”

By promoting your company through an “about us” page or description of the company origins, you help candidates find a common thread that they can relate to. You may draw candidates that share your company values and instill a deeper loyalty by putting effort into the literature and videos that tell your company story.

Frequent Communication

After applications have been submitted, candidates appreciate expedient and frequent communication. Simply letting the candidates know that applications have been received is a great first step, but candidates should also be informed when they are moving from one phase of the hiring process to the next, if there will be a delay in response due to hiring manager time off, or other relevant information.

Keeping candidates in the loop by sending a message or calling every few days with updates lets candidates know that their time is valued.

Honesty and Respect

If a candidate isn’t right for the position that he or she applied for within your company, letting him or her know is what will garner you the most gratitude. Nobody likes to be left on the hook wondering if they will be hired. Being straightforward with candidates is honest and respectful, something every individual can appreciate.
